Can you use a 6v charger for a 12V toy?

On the safe side we would say, no, you cannot charge a 12v toy with a 6v charger.

On a few occasions, they are compatible, but this is not the norm.

All batteries, regardless of type, require a specific charging current and a maximum terminal voltage. If you use more than the recommended charging current, the battery will heat up and possibly explode or catch fire.

The battery's behaviour will change depending on the cell type if you go above the maximum terminal voltage. Fire and explosion are certainly possible. The battery life and performance will be reduced significantly.

Can you use a 12v charger for a 6V toy?

Not doing so will cause you to overcharge the battery which will damage it both in the short and long run.

No, it does not matter where you buy the charger. Just ensure you replace like for like by checking the instruction booklet your toy came with to ensure you know the exact specifications needed.
